At least thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
