Finest Television Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Motion Pictures This Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance

The filmmaker's bold commentary tackles the demanding standards for female beauty as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore presents an inspired acting turn as Elisabeth, an aging film star reduced to presenting a fitness program on television. Edged out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and terrifying treatment called "The Substance". This generates a younger clone called Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship between the two. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful mystery stars Keira Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a break from writing about international wars to embark on a high-end voyage with a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her spouse, and other extremely wealthy guests. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform

Presence Film

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries through this innovative paranormal narrative shot entirely from the viewpoint of the phantom. After a clan including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who accepts a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, Cage's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's locked-room horror stands strong without requiring a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the youth anxious. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers giving advice, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Chastain achieves to show the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This period's second offering by the same director is a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to discover a mole inside the organization from five suspects – one of whom is his spouse. The two stars excel of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema
