The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Comes After Poor Response

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined game identity.

The president noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Hires

This announcement follows a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete message from Ismailer's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.

His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.

David

Background of the New Leader

The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Face the opponents with unique powers, risks, and tests that change every match. Do you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and pray your group can secure victory? The choice is yours."

The game lacks an official release date or platforms, but fans can expect further news as production progresses.
