Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official commented the attack left him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
